Campspace — Bottling the Memory of a Perfect Holiday
Date: 2018
What if you could take the feeling of your holiday home with you?
In collaboration with Houdbaar, a signature scent was developed for Campspace — a platform connecting travellers with unique outdoor camping spots across Europe. The brief was deceptively simple: create a fragrance that captures the feeling of being outside, away from everything, surrounded by nature.
But the real ambition went further than that.
The scent was designed to be used during the holiday — so that smell and memory could form a direct connection. Geosmin, the molecule responsible for the distinctive smell of earth after rain, was combined with white florals and woody base notes to create something immediately recognisable as the outdoors: fresh, grounding, alive.
When you arrive home and spray it again, the memory comes back completely.
The science behind scent and memory
This is not coincidence — it is neuroscience. The olfactory system has a uniquely direct connection to the hippocampus and amygdala, the brain regions responsible for memory and emotion. No other sense has this shortcut. A scent experienced during an emotionally significant moment becomes a reliable key to that memory for years, sometimes decades, afterwards.
Campspace used this mechanism deliberately — turning a fragrance into a lasting part of the holiday experience itself.
